Creative dance is the exploration of the elements of dance through structured improvisation. Rather than being imitative, the goal of creative dance is communication and self-expression through movement, allowing students to learn to “speak” through their bodies while developing movement skills. A typical class consists of a warm-up circle, rhythm exercises, structured improvisation focusing on the “element of the day”, movement skills across the floor, and choreography exercises. Creative dance provides an excellent foundation for study in all dance disciplines.
